Micah's Mother's Day Gift
Pencils, crayons, markers missing caps
Cut paths through mazes,
Tracing lines there and back.
Squiggling circles or little squares
Insisting pink's her favorite color
While drawing lips or silly hair.
And though her hand can barely hold
Instruments too big for a three year old,
There's mommy's hand even steadier still,
That guiding light, a teachers will.
Mother's Day each year becomes a richer, deeper experience as I watch Jennifer grow in her role alongside Michaela. The woman who I came to know as my best friend, then wife, and finally mother to my daughter three years ago has once again transformed before me into Michaela's teacher and mentor. I cannot describe the feeling of pride and love I feel as a father and husband. This Mother's Day, I tried to capture just a small part of the story in this photo collage--a gift to Jennifer for her never ending love with which she showers Michaela.
Jennifer started a journal titled "Once Upon a Time" in which she envisioned sharing memories about us with Michaela as she got older. I couldn't think of a more appropriate occasion than today to share with my daughter the incredible woman she is so blessed to call "Mommy."
My Dearest Michaela,
On this day, Mother's Day, here in Norway I watched and listened as you regaled me with stories of princesses in castles, school time owls and big towers. I watched in amazement at how much you've grown--your insistence that you not not a baby, but rather a little girl. I want you to know on this very special day how much your mommy has lovingly guided you to this point--how she has guided your hands while revealing the world to you one step...one page...one song...one painting at a time. You are discovering this world through her eye and she through you. My dearest daughter, you will never know the love she has for you until you have a child of your own to guide, to lead, to teach!
I love you my princess...
